About this database
The British Film Database is an independent reference site, not connected with the British Film Institute (BFI) or the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). It lists British feature films released from 1950 onwards. Each film has its release date, cast, director, genres, studio and distributor, and where known the certificate it was given when it was first released.
Where the information comes from
The list of films and most of their details come from Wikidata, the free knowledge base that anyone can edit, which places its data in the public domain. The billing order of the cast, and some studio and distributor names, come from the films' articles on English Wikipedia.
What is included
A film is included when Wikidata gives the United Kingdom, England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland as a country of origin, so British co-productions are included. Short films (under 40 minutes), television films and entries with too little information to identify the film are left out.
Certificates
A film's original certificate is shown only where a source records the certificate it received on first release. Later certificates given for video, DVD or reissues are not shown as the original, so many older films have no certificate listed yet.
Gaps
The database is only as complete as its sources, which are written by volunteers. Some films have no cast, studio or genre recorded yet, and these will fill in as the sources improve.
